Iconography of the Miraculous Madonna

The iconographic representation of the Miraculous Madonna is based primarily on the apparition of Mary to Saint Catherine Labouré in 1830. In the apparitions to Catherine, the Madonna appeared specifically as "the Immaculate Conception" and required the minting of a medal according to the model he had shown her. The main characteristics of this iconographic representation are described below:

The Virgin Mary: The Miraculous Madonna is usually depicted as a young woman of great beauty, with a serene and gentle expression. She wears a white dress, a symbol of purity, with a blue veil covering her head and shoulders. This veil can be decorated with stars, recalling the title of "Our Lady of Grace" and the words spoken by Our Lady in the apparition to Catherine.

The hands and the globe: Our Lady of Miracle is often depicted with open hands, emanating rays of light, symbolizing the graces and blessings that she bestows on those who pray to her. She sometimes holds a globe in her hand, which represents her kingship and her spiritual dominion over the entire world.

The serpent: At the feet of the Madonna, a serpent or dragon is often depicted, a symbol of evil and sin. The Madonna crushes the serpent with her foot, symbolizing the victory of good over evil and the triumph of grace over temptation.

The dawn of stars: Around the image of the Madonna, particularly in the version of the Miraculous Medal, there are stars in relief on her mantle and around her head. These stars are symbols of the graces that the Madonna distributes to those who invoke her with devotion.

The Miraculous Medal: In many representations, the Miraculous Madonna holds in her hands a medal like the one requested by Catherine Labouré. This medal is often oval and features the image of the Madonna as described in the apparitions, with the words "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you" around the edge.

The iconographic representation of the Miraculous Madonna has become very popular among Catholic devotees and the Miraculous Medal is one of the most recognizable and loved symbols in Marian devotion. Her image recalls the purity, protection and graces bestowed by the Madonna on those who rely on her intercession.

And let's see how the Medal of the Miraculous Madonna is specifically represented: The Miraculous Medal, also known as the "Medal of Our Lady of Graces" or the "Medal of Our Lady of the Rue du Bac," is a medal with a specific design which was revealed during the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Saint Catherine Labouré in 1830. The medal is characterized by several distinctive iconographic features:

Front of the Medal:

Image of Mary: In the center of the medal, there is an image of the Virgin Mary as she appeared to Catherine Labouré during her apparitions. Mary is depicted standing on a globe, crushing a serpent with her feet, symbolizing her victory over evil.

Rays of light: Rays of light extend from the Madonna to the ends of the medal, symbolizing the graces and blessings she bestows on those who invoke her.

Writing in a semicircle: Around the image of Mary, at the top, is a writing in a semicircle with the words meaning "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you." These words were dictated by Our Lady herself to Catherine Labouré and represent a prayer of invocation.

Back of the Medal:

M in a cross with two hearts: The reverse of the medal features an "M" surmounted by a cross, and two hearts: one crowned with thorns and one pierced by a sword. The "M" stands for Mary, while the hearts represent the Heart of Jesus (crowned with thorns, symbolizing her pain) and the Heart of Mary (pierced by the sword, symbolizing her pain in seeing her Son suffer).

Stars: Surrounding the main emblem are twelve stars, recalling the symbol of "Our Lady of Grace" and representing the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles.

The Miraculous Medal was first minted in 1832, according to Our Lady's instructions to Catherine Labouré. Since then, it has become an object of great devotion among Catholics throughout the world. Many believe that carrying or wearing it can bring protection, grace and intercession from the Virgin Mary and Jesus. The Miraculous Medal is an icon of the Catholic faith and Marian devotion.
